We had the idea of designing our own restaurant for a long time and thought it would be accomplished 10 years from then. Yet, life was full of surprises and we fulfilled our dream in 2011.
The concept of the restaurant was to create a “Community Hot Spot” and to attract people via delicious food. In order to involve more people into our cultural hot spot, we also provided a reading lounge, mini exhibition, salon, film screening and other information for public activities, etc. Rather than just a restaurant, we wished to treat it as an experimental space for the neighborhood such as OCT and 798 (OCT and 798 are renovated factory places for frontier artist gathering, which influenced the business mode of Modern Art in China).
Though our restaurant is not located in the downtown area, we believed such a place, which combines the activities of both eating and social cultivation, would bring in interesting things.
Luckily, it seemed our restaurant gained a lot of admiration. As a place to relax, we attracted all different kinds of people and a lot of them became our friends. Some of them even made themselves home and would spend the whole afternoon in the garden just chatting, reading or tasting tea. Everyone shared stories, elevating the project from a mere space to a community.
The overall space is composed of two mayor functions: cafeteria and work studio. The cafeteria is located on the 1st floor and part of the 2nd floor. The work studio is located at the end of the 2nd floor facing the street. We identified two initial problems when we first encountered the site. First, the space was a super narrow town house typology. People standing inside would immediately feel depressed because of its inappropriate ratio between height and length (Pic1). Our task was to eliminate this feeling of depression and to make use of the current situation.
We came up with the solution of “space decomposition” (Pic2). First, we opened up the 1st floor entrance and transformed it into a garden that embraces the urban context. Accompanied with planting and glamorous lighting fixture, we extended the openness into the cafeteria space (Pic3-5).

Instead of a full floor, we constructed only half of the 2nd floor in order to leave a double height space for the 1st floor cafeteria. The space successfully suppresses its original feeling of narrowness (Pic6). Making use of the corner space was also another gesture we utilized to activate the restaurant, which you can notice clearly in the bar area. On the 2nd floor, we have a mini gallery space that performs as a lure to pull customers upstairs (Pic7). Light and warm color is the major tone for the interior and furniture.

By implementing two adjacent sloping roof cabinets, we made a focus point among the space sequence and generated interests for the double height space (Pic6, 10). In Chinese gardens, planners usually manipulated the walking path to direct people’s eye sight. Continuing the principle, we managed to make use of the stair and try to create different scenes for people moving upward to the 2nd floor. (Pic9-10).

Customers love the intimate feeling inside these two little cabinets. Staying in the semi-private “house”, which is literally the geometric outline of a typical house, people can sip coffee and tea while in the meantime appreciate the exhibition pieces posted on the long wall (Pic11-13).

3 years had passed since we designed the restaurant. We adored our instant determination at the beginning. Sooner, we learned from the process that a simple decision needed a lot of input to make it happen and run smoothly. The business went up and down, at one point we were even influenced by political events that almost tore the restaurant apart. However, we believe there is nothing that cannot be conquered if we can support each other, grow together, and understand each other. Maybe that’s the value of life.
