Introduction

Bo Zhang & Kingking Wang graduated from SZU, respectively, in 2008/2010. Meeting each other in 2010, they fell in love and started their career. As an architect couple, they designed and constructed their own restaurant and apartment together. With the help of TOPOS, WULUN had an opportunity to create a dialogue with them at their home.

Architectural design/education often confuses non-designers because architects sometimes tend to distinguish themselves from other disiplines by using highly technical terminology. However, architecture should be accessible to everyone. We wanted to facilitate this relationship.

WULUN is interested in communicating with architects by asking simple questions and discovering their ideas through various discourses.

Interview Excerption

Q: What does HOME mean to you?

Bo Zhang: We understand the concept of HOME step by step. Back in the days when we were living in a 200 sq. ft. apartment after graduation, we possessed little furniture. Progressively, we started to acquire more. There were no formal living room and kitchen in that apartment, but friends still came and we made hot pot all the time. Everyone felt happy disregarding the crude situation. It was our precious memories.

The other day, two friends came and they loved the size of our apartment. (Editor: It seems the size of home has no direct relation with happiness.). Yes, everyone has their different idea on “HOME”.

Q: Did you try anything new in the design?

Kingking: We tried a lot of new stuff in our apartment. it both gave us the chance to examine our ideas for construction methods, while also allowed us the courage to experiment on our own project.

For example, look at the wall at the back of our studio. We added a H-shape steel for the left-over space between the glass bricks in order to make the wall a whole piece. The H-shape steel is decorative for the studio, but because of its hooks it is functional for storage.

Bo Zhang: A lot of architects experiment on their own house and projects. I read an article about Alva Aalto and he tried hundreds of tiling methods on the elevations of his own house and that is a sort of experiment that inspires us a lot.

Q: How would a non-designer comment on your apartment?

Bo Zhang: People don’t comment much when they see the apartment. What matters most is whether they feel good in the space, whether the mattress is soft, whether you offer them good food and good landscapes through the window. Those are the things that interest them and it is true for everyone. Because of this, we love to discuss with non-professionals since they have totally different perspectives. As a result, we might be able to communicate our design ideas to them based on this understanding.

Q: Do you follow a specific design style?

Bo Zhang: When we visited SANNA in Japan and had a chance to talk with Kazuyo Sejima, we asked, “what is your concept of architectural design?” It seems to be a rule we should follow under Chinese architectural education: you need to have an idea to support your design. However, she paused for a while after we asked her the question. She said they had no concept for their architecture. They were just creating space with good quality. Maybe the white walls, which you tagged as a “style”, were merely personal interest and not the crucial to the design. The critical thing is the atmosphere they brought about.

Even through a small project like HOME, we were able to reflect on ourselves. We have a long way to go, but for Kingking and myself, we both love our career.
